Product Info
Extend™ - Step 2 is a gut supplement for horses prone to gastric symptoms due to hard work, stress, travelling and competitions. It can be used as a part of our 3-step gastric programme or as part of a maintenance feeding plan, helping preserve intestinal barrier function.
Extend™ - Step 2 is formulated with key ingredients that support gut health including Inulin, Papaya, Flax, Milled Chia Seeds and L-Arginine, which utilises nitric oxide pathway precursors.
It can be used for part of a short or long-term feeding plan ensuring that you are supporting his gut with high quality equine nutrition.
Inulin prebiotic
Inulin, a prebiotic derived from Chicory Root, is used to support a healthy gut by selectively encouraging certain beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium to proliferate in the horse's hindgut. This, in turn, can improve fibre metabolization, nutrient absorption, and overall digestive health.
Papaya
Papaya, particularly the papain enzyme found within it, is used to support digestion and gastric health. It can help the process of protein breakdown, nutrient absorption, and stimulate salivation, which can benefit horses with digestive issues.
Flax
Flaxseed is rich in soluble fibre, particularly mucilage which forms a gel like coating when mixed with digestive fluids acting as a barrier against stomach acid. Flax is one of the best plant sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid helping with gastric and intestinal inflammation and restoring health to ulcerated tissue.
Milled Chia Seeds
Milled chia seeds support gut wall integrity, gut motility and supports a healthy microbiome. They contain soluble fibre, which forms a gel-like substance when mixed with digestive fluids. It helps slow down digestion, allowing better nutrient absorption and the fibre in chia acts as a prebiotic and assists with the fermentation of forage. Chia Seeds also contain flavonoids and phenolic acids that help reduce oxidative stress. The 3:1 ratio of Omega 3 to 6 in Chia Seeds is close to the essential fatty acid ratio naturally present in pasture grasses.
L-Arginine
An amino acid, converted in the body into Nitric Oxide(NO), helping to deliver nutrients to the entire gastric system.
3-Step Gastric Programme
Step 1 - Gastro™ is the most concentrated formula in the gastric range, helping preserve and restore intestinal barrier function. Ideal for horses showing symptoms of gastric discomfort, changes in behaviour, grass and turnout changes, travelling and competitions.
Step 2 - Gastro Extend™ can be used as a follow on from Gastro™ - Step 1 or used as maintenance if your horse competes regularly or is prone to stress.
Step 3 - SFM PRO™ & SFM PRO - Extra Calmer™ is a daily gut maintenance for your horses gut health. Includes essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids, ideal for when grazing is limited, grass is lacking and throughout winter when nutrients in the grass are lower or turnout is restricted.
FAQ’s
What are the signs of gut discomfort?
It could show itself in many ways including being sharp, bucking, spooky or behind the leg, loose droppings, sensitive to groom or girth up, general behaviour changes (you know your horse best!)
How long should my horse stay on Gastro™ Step 2?
Extend™ is used as maintenance for horses that are prone to gastric symptoms due to hard work, stress, travelling and competitions. However, if you horse seems consistently comfortable on Step 2, you could move on to one of the SFM PRO™ – Step 3(stomach function maintenance) supplements.
Should I split the daily amount over two feeds?
It is recommended that your horse has its maintenance amount in one feed, so for a 500kg horse, you need to use 1 scoop into one feed and for a 600kg horse, 2 scoops into one feed. Do not split the maintenance dose into two feeds. 2 scoops per day = 2 scoops in one feed.
For loading doses (the first 3-5 days of feeding), you need to use the required dosage into two separate feeds (morning & evening).
I’m not sure my horse will eat it?
Palatability samples are available on our website, so that you can ensure your horse is happy to eat it.
What’s the difference between Step 1 and Step 2?
Gastro™ Step 1 has a higher level of amino acids, of which some are different to Extend™ Step 2. Extend™ Step 2 is focused more on maintaining gastric health whereas Gastro™ Step 1 is formulated to target damage in the gut caused by excessive acid.
